IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is transitioning from its budget carrier image as it expands its international presence and introduces business-class options. By March, the airline aims to increase its international destinations to about 40, compared to 26 two years ago, and has introduced premium “stretch” cabins on key domestic routes. Under CEO Pieter Elbers, IndiGo is evolving into a hybrid airline model to compete with global long-haul carriers. The airline has captured over 60% of the domestic market, up from 37% a decade ago, and plans to double its fleet size by the end of the decade. Despite challenges such as increased competition, high fuel costs, and a weakening rupee, IndiGo is optimistic about its future growth, bolstered by new aircraft orders and expanding infrastructure.
