A significant shortage of air traffic controllers in the U.S. has been linked to the Federal Aviation Administration’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices. A lawsuit claims these practices led to the exclusion of over 1,000 qualified candidates for being “too white, too elite.” The candidates who were previously accepted underwent additional biographical assessments that drastically reduced their chances of being hired. This has contributed to an ongoing shortfall of 3,800 air traffic controllers. The shortage has recently been highlighted by a deadly aviation incident, emphasizing the importance of adequate staffing levels. The FAA’s interrupted hiring process during the DEI policy implementation and pandemic-related disruptions further exacerbated the issue. Efforts to revamp recruitment and training are ongoing, but challenges persist, with understaffing impacting air traffic control operations nationwide.
