Innovators Gear Up Work on ‘Green’ Hydrogen Plane

Swiss aviation pioneer Bertrand Piccard is spearheading Climate Impulse, a new ambitious project centered on creating a two-seater plane powered by green hydrogen. Following his Solar Impulse’s sun-powered flight around the world ten years ago, Piccard aims for a nonstop nine-day circumnavigation of the Earth with the Climate Impulse aircraft. This plane will use liquid hydrogen produced through electrolysis to generate power, creating only water vapor as emissions. Despite significant advancements, such as the construction of the cockpit shell and commencement of wing spar building, the project still faces numerous challenges. These include efficiently regulating the flow of hydrogen, ensuring leak-proof storage at extremely low temperatures, and managing the risks of hydrogen flammability. First test flights are slated for next year with the goal of achieving the world-circling trip by 2028. If successful, this could significantly further the development of green hydrogen-powered commercial flights, though experts suggest widespread application may still be decades away.
