Air New Zealand has been named the world’s safest airline for 2025 by Airlineratings.com, followed closely by Qantas. The two airlines had a narrow margin of just 1.50 points between them. Close contenders for third place include Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, and Emirates, with Virgin Australia and Etihad Airways taking fourth and fifth spots respectively. The AirlineRatings.com assessment considers factors such as serious incidents, fatalities, fleet age, and expert pilot training. Qantas-owned Jetstar ranked second among the safest low-cost airlines. Noteworthy changes in the rankings include the debut of Iberia and Vietnam Airlines, and the omission of Singapore Airlines and KLM due to recent incidents. Airlines are evaluated on their approach to safety, incident management, and operational practices. A global study indicates flying remains significantly safer than road travel, with a death risk of one in 13.7 million between 2018-2022. Airlineratings.com, in collaboration with Skyscanner, has introduced a platform allowing users to search flights based on safety, price, and duration.
